Your calendar is full, your task list is moving, and somehow the business still feels slightly out of focus. That’s the problem we tackle here: real strategy is hard to do while you’re chained to your desk in execution mode. When we’re surrounded by email, messages, and “the next thing,” we stay on the ground. Strategy needs altitude, and we’ve found that the fastest way to get it is to physically step away and make it impossible to execute for a set block of time.

We share the simple idea behind the “porch hour” and why it works even if you don’t smoke cigars. The cigar isn’t the point; the constraint is. When you can’t answer email or open a laptop, your brain finally starts connecting dots you’ve been missing: where your best clients really come from, which services keep causing headaches, and whether you’re executing a plan that no longer makes sense. This is practical business strategy for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and leaders who want clearer decision making and better business planning without adding more chaos.

We also talk about making this a weekly practice, not a once-a-year retreat, and why that rhythm keeps you from waking up one day and realizing you built the wrong thing. Before you go, we flag a quick resource if you’ve been considering paid ads and want to avoid expensive guessing. Subscribe for more, share this with a fellow owner who’s stuck in doing mode, and leave a review with your favorite “step away” ritual.

If this sparked ideas for your brand or business, subscribe for more deep dives, share the show with a founder who needs focus, and leave a quick review to help others find it. Why Strategy Happens Off Desk

SPEAKER_01

today. I want to talk about where my actual strategy happens, and it's not at my desk. It's on the porch with a cigar and no agenda.

SPEAKER_00

We've touched the porch before, but I get the sense this is a little different.

SPEAKER_01

It is. Last time we talked about the porch as a decision making spot. Today I want to talk about it as a strategy spot, which is a different thing. Decisions are about choosing. Strategy is about seeing the whole board. And you can't see the whole board when you're buried in it.

SPEAKER_00

So you have to physically step away to see it.

SPEAKER_01

You have to step away. Here's what I've learned. At my desk, I'm in execution mode. Tasks, messages, the next thing on the list. That's the wrong headspace for strategy. Strategy needs altitude, and the desk keeps you on the ground.

SPEAKER_00

So the cigar on the porch gives you altitude.

SPEAKER_01

The cigar is the trick that gets me there. I light it, I sit down, and for that hour there's nothing to execute. I can't answer email with a cigar in my hand and no laptop. So my brain finally lifts up out of the weeds and starts seeing patterns.

Seeing Patterns You Keep Missing

SPEAKER_00

What kind of patterns?

SPEAKER_01

The stuff you miss when you're heads down. Why do all my best clients come from the same source, and why am I not doing more of that? This service keeps causing problems. Maybe I should kill it. Big picture connections that never surface when you're grinding through the day.

SPEAKER_00

And those don't come at the desk?

SPEAKER_01

Almost never. The desk is for doing, the porch is for seeing. They're two completely different modes, and most owners only ever live in the first one. They're so busy executing the strategy that they never step back to ask if it's even the right strategy.

SPEAKER_00

That's a trap I think a lot of people are in without realizing it.

SPEAKER_01

It's the most common trap there is. Busy all day every day, and never once lifting your head to look at the whole picture. You can run hard in the wrong direction for years if you never step

back.

SPEAKER_00

So for someone who doesn't smoke cigars, what's the move?

SPEAKER_01

Same as always, find your version of it. The cigar isn't magic, it's just a forced hour where I can't do anything but think. A long walk works. Sitting on the porch with coffee works, a drive with the radio off works. The point is removing the ability to execute so your brain shifts into seeing mode.

Make Strategy A Weekly Practice

SPEAKER_00

And it has to be regular, not just once.

SPEAKER_01

That's the key. This isn't a once a year retreat thing. I'm out there weekly. Strategy isn't something you set and forget. It's something you revisit constantly as the business moves. The owners who do this regularly are the ones who never wake up one day and realize they built the wrong thing.

SPEAKER_00

So the smoke break isn't a break from the work. It is the work.

SPEAKER_01

It's the most important work I do. Anyone can stay busy. Very few people make the time to lift up and actually think about where the whole thing is going. That hour on the porch has changed the direction of my business more than once.

SPEAKER_00

I think this conversation is worth sitting with and reflecting on

Paid Ads Readiness Quiz Plug

for a while.

SPEAKER_01

Quick one before you go. If you've been thinking about running paid ads, but you're not totally sure your business is ready for them, listen up.
