It's very true. Here's the thing. A lot of service businesses spend real money getting the phone to ring. Ads, SEO, referrals, all of it. Then the call comes in after hours or while they're on a job, and it just rings out.

Three Rules For Doing It Right

That said, you're right about how it should be done. Three rules I'd give anybody. Be up front that it's an assistant, don't pretend it's a person. Keep it short. Its job is to get the basics and get a time on the calendar, not to hold a twenty minute conversation. Make it easy to reach a human. If somebody says I want to talk to a person, that's a callback first thing in the morning.
